In 1964, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson established a committee to address the ongoing issue of the absence of an official Canadian flag. This decision sparked a significant debate regarding the replacement of the Union Flag. After considering three options, the design featuring a maple leaf by George Stanley, inspired by the flag of the Royal Military College of Canada, was chosen. On February 15, 1965, the flag made its inaugural appearance, and this date is now commemorated annually as National Flag of Canada Day.

The Canadian Red Ensign had been informally used since the 1860s and was officially approved for use through a 1945 Order in Council. It was intended to be flown in situations where a distinct Canadian flag was deemed appropriate. Additionally, the Royal Union Flag continues to hold official status in Canada, symbolizing the country’s allegiance to the monarch and its membership in the Commonwealth of Nations. While there is no specific legislation governing the treatment of the national flag, there are established conventions and protocols that dictate its display and position in the order of precedence among flags. These guidelines grant the Canadian flag precedence over the aforementioned flags and most others.
