Subhead:Alberta alienation has been a recurring feature of provincial politics since at least the 1930s under William Aberhart’s Social Credit government. It re-emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s following Pierre Trudeau’s National Energy Program, gave rise to the Western Canada Concept, and has periodically resurfaced over constitutional disputes, equalization, energy policy and federal-provincial relations.#

Former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk has claimed “Separatism is just another ideation of the Yellow Vests movement, created by Russia to destabilize the European Union. The playbook is identical.”

Separatism is just another ideation of the Yellow Vests movement, created by Russia to destabilize the European Union.
The playbook is identical.
We must find a way to constructively dialogue with that angry crowd.https://t.co/xYuWVS4L7c

That’s a sweeping allegation. It is also one that lacks publicly available evidence, given there is no credible proof that Alberta’s independence movement was created by Russia.
The modern Alberta independence movement has deep roots that long predate both the European Yellow Vest protests and contemporary concerns about Russian influence campaigns.
